DMACC women's basketball team tops LPT to end eight-game losing streak

Freshman Jada Powell of Des Moines recorded a double-double with 21 points and 22 rebounds as the Des Moines Area Community College (DMACC) women's basketball team ended an eight-game losing streak with a 104-57 win over Little Priest Tribal February 8 inside the DMACC gymnasium.

 

Freshman Riley Gatton of Montezuma had 17 points and sophomore Hannah McKinney of Des Moines and freshman Emma Mace of Hawarden came away with 13 and 10 points respectively as the Bears improved to 9-15 overall and 3-8 in the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC).

 

DMACC led 24-11 at the end of the first quarter and 46-20 at halftime. The Bears had a 74-39 advantage at the end of the third quarter.

 

DMACC shot 47 percent in the win, making 38 of 81 field goal attempts. The Bears were 15-of-36 from three-point range and 13-of-20 from the free throw line.

 

Powell's 22 rebounds lifted DMACC to a 65-40 advantage on the boards. Gatton and freshman Katelyn Courtney of Ames had eight rebounds apiece and sophomore Taelor Lessmeier of Fort Dodge dished out a team-high five assists. Sophomore Asia Mena of Chicago, Ill., had four assists and Gatton, McKinney and freshman Shamir Brown of Tuscaloosa, Ala., had three assists apiece. Courtney led DMACC in blocked shots with seven.

 

The DMACC women's basketball team will face Kirkwood Community College (KCC) Feb. 12 at Cedar Rapids. The Eagles, ranked second in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division II poll, are 22-2 overall and 9-1 in the ICCAC. They defeated DMACC, 89-58, when the two teams played Jan. 15 inside the DMACC gymnasium.
