DMACC women's basketball team falls to NIACC,

Sophomore Hannah McKinney of Des Moines scored 15 points and sophomore Asia Mena of Chicago, Ill., added 10 as the Des Moines Area Community College (DMACC) women's basketball team dropped an 85-52 decision to North Iowa Area Community College (NIACC) February 1 at Mason City.

 

The loss was the seventh in a row for the Bears and their 14th of the season against eight wins. They are 2-7 in the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC).

 

NIACC, ranked fourth in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division II poll, led throughout the game. The Trojans were ahead 17-10 at the end of the first quarter, 43-18 at halftime and 62-33 at the end of the third quarter.

 

DMACC shot 29 percent in the loss, making 17 of 58 field goal attempts. The Bears were 5-of-27 from three-point range and 13-of-17 from the free throw line.

 

NIACC came away with a 54-42 decision on the boards with McKinney's nine rebounds leading DMACC. Freshman Jada Powell of Des Moines had seven rebounds and Mena finished with five. Freshman Shamir Brown of Tuscaloosa, Ala., led the Bears in assists and steals with three each.

 

The DMACC women's basketball team will play Southeastern Community College (SECC) Feb. 5 inside the DMACC gymnasium. Game time is 5:30 p.m. SECC is 13-9 overall and 5-5 in the ICCAC.
