DMACC women's basketball team falls to Kirkwood, 89-58

Sophomore Hannah McKinney of Des Moines scored 11 points and sophomore Asia Mena of Chicago, Ill., added 11 as the Des Moines Area Community College (DMACC) women's basketball team dropped an 89-58 decision to Kirkwood Community College (KCC) January 15 inside the DMACC gymnasium.

 

The loss was the ninth of the season for the Bears, who have eight wins, and gave them a 2-3 record in the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC).

 

KCC, the No. 1-ranked women's basketball team in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division II poll, led throughout the game. The Eagles were up 27-12 at the end of the first quarter, 52-29 at halftime and 75-44 at the end of the third quarter.

 

DMACC shot 33 percent in the loss, hitting 23 of 69 field goal attempts. The Bears were 12-of-36 from three-point range and missed all three of their free throw attempts.

 

KCC came away with a 53-35 advantage in rebounding with freshman Katelyn Courtney of Ames grabbing 10 rebounds to lead DMACC. Mena added six rebounds and dished out two assists. Freshman Katie Scott of Polk City led the Bears in assists with three and McKinney and freshman Riley Gatton of Montezuma joined Mena with two apiece.

 

The DMACC women's basketball team will face Iowa Central Community College (ICCC) Jan. 19 at Fort Dodge. ICCC is 11-7 overall and 3-2 in the ICCAC.
