DMACC women's basketball team falls to sixth-ranked NIACC, 77-62

Sophomore Hannah McKinney of Des Moines reached double figures with 16 points as the Des Moines Area Community College (DMACC) women's basketball team dropped a 77-62 decision to North Iowa Area Community College (NIACC) January 11 inside the DMACC gymnasium.

 

NIACC, ranked Sixth in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division II poll, pulled away in the second half to improved to 16-1 overall and 3-0 in the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC).

 

McKinney was the only DMACC player to score in double figures as the Bears fell to 8-8 and 2-2.

 

DMACC hung with the Trojans throughout the first half, leading 19-17 at the end of the first quarter and trailing 38-37 at halftime. NIACC outscored the Bears 22-14 in the third period for a 60-51 lead at the end of the period.

 

DMACC shot 38 percent in the loss, hitting 24 of 63 field goal attempts. The Bears were 6-of-24 from three-point range and 8-of-10 from the free throw line.

 

Sophomore Reganne Brewster of Grand Forks, N.D., and freshman Katelyn Courtney of Ames grabbed six rebounds apiece and McKinney and freshman Riley Gatton of Montezuma had five apiece to lift DMACC to a 46-45 advantage on the boards. Gatton and sophomore Asia Mena of Chicago, Ill., led the Bears in assists with three apiece and sophomore Cailey Schaa of Council Bluffs topped DMACC in steals with two.

 

The schedule doesn't get any easier for the Bears, who host Kirkwood Community College (KCC) Jan. 15 inside the DMACC gymnasium. Game time is 5:30 p.m. The Eagles, ranked first in the NJCAA Division II poll, are 16-1 and lead the ICCAC at 3-0.
