DMACC women's basketball team opens conference play with 70-45 victory

Freshman Riley Gatton of Montezuma scored 16 points and sophomore Hannah McKinney of Des Moines collected a double-double with 12 points and 12 rebounds to lead the Des Moines Area Community College (DMACC) women's basketball team to a 70-45 win over Ellsworth Community College (ECC) December 4 inside the DMACC gymnasium.

 

The victory came in the Bears' Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC) opener, giving them a 1-0 record in the league and a 5-6 mark overall. Freshman Reganne Brewster of Grand Forks, N.D., contributed eight points to the win and sophomores Asia Mena of Chicago, Ill., and Taelor Lessmeier of Fort Dodge scored six points apiece.

 

DMACC led throughout the game. The Bears were up 10-7 at the end of the first quarter and led 37-18 at halftime. They had a 48-28 advantage at the end of the third quarter.

 

DMACC shot 32 percent in the win, connecting on 23 of 71 field goal attempts. The Bears made eight of 26 three-point attempts for 31 percent and drained 16 of 25 free throw attempts for 64 percent.

 

McKinney's 12 rebounds helped DMACC to a 59-53 advantage on the boards. Freshman Emma Mace of Hawarden collected eight rebounds and freshman Katelyn Courtney of Ames grabbed six. Freshman Katie Scott of Polk City led the Bears in assists with five and came away with two steals. Mena and Lessmeier also had two steals apiece.

 

The DMACC women's basketball team will continue conference play Dec. 7 when the Bears face Little Priest Tribal (LPT) at Winnebago, Neb. LPT is 0-9 overall and 0-0 in league play.
