DMACC women's basketball team improves to 4-5 with 84-33 win

The Des Moines Area Community College (DMACC) women's basketball team ran its record to 4-5 for the season following an 84-33 win over County Upper Academy (CUA) November 23 inside the DMACC gymnasium.

 

The win was the second straight for the Bears, who opened the season with back-to-back victories and then suffered through a five-game losing streak.

 

Sophomore Cailey Schaa of Council Bluffs and freshman Riley Gatton of Montezuma topped DMACC in the win, scoring 18 and 13 points respectively. Freshman Jada Powell of Des Moines contributed nine points and freshman Emma Mace of Hawarden finished with seven points.

 

DMACC led all the way. The Bears were up 23-9 at the end of the first quarter and had a 44-16 advantage at halftime. They held a 59-20 advantage at the end of the third quarter.

 

DMACC shot 42 percent, hitting 33 of 78 field goal attempts. The Bears made 15 of 38 three-point attempts and were 3-of-7 from the free throw line.

 

Powell's 10 rebounds and seven from sophomore Hannah McKinney of Des Moines helped DMACC to a 46-32 advantage on the boards. Freshman Shamir Brown of Tuscaloosa, Ala., topped the Bears in assists with five and Gatton, Schaa and freshman Katie Scott of Polk City had three assists apiece. Brown also led DMACC in steals with four and Gatton and sophomore Asia Mena of Chicago, Ill., had two apiece.

 

The DMACC women's basketball team will face Black Hawk College-Moline Nov. 26 inside the DMACC gymnasium. Game time is 5:30 p.m.
