DMACC women's basketball team ends five-game losing streak

Freshman Jada Powell of Des Moines recorded a double-double with 23 points and 14 rebounds as the Des Moines Area Community College (DMACC) women's basketball team ended a five-game losing streak with an 80-64 win over Marshalltown Community College (MCC) November 19 inside the DMACC gymnasium.

 

Sophomore Asia Mena of Chicago, Ill., freshman Riley Gatton of Montezuma and sophomore Taelor Lessmeier of Fort Dodge also reached double-figures with 18, 13 and 12 points respectively as the Bears improved to 3-5 for the season and avenged a 68-64 loss to MCC on Nov. 19.

 

DMACC led throughout the game. The Bears were up 16-9 at the end of the first quarter, 36-25 at halftime and 56-47 at the end of the third quarter. They shot 54 percent in the win, making 32 of 59 field goal attempts. DMACC was 7-of-17 from three-point range and 9-of-19 from the free throw line.

 

Powell's 14 rebounds led the Bears to a 42-33 advantage on the boards. Mena and freshman Katelyn Courtney of Ames had five rebounds apiece and Mena topped DMACC in assists with four. Courtney also had three assists and led the Bears in steals with three.

 

The DMACC women's basketball team will play County Upper Academy (CUA) Nov. 23 inside the DMACC gymnasium. Game time is 1 p.m .
