DMACC women's basketball team drops two games in Ramada Classic

The Des Moines Area Community College (DMACC) women's basketball team saw its record slip to 2-2 following a pair of losses in the Ramada Classic November 8 and 9 at Columbus, Neb.

 

The Bears fell to Southeast (Neb.) Community College (SENEB), 78-72, on Nov. 8 and dropped a 72-64 decision to Central (Neb.) Community College (CNEBCC) on Nov. 9.

 

Sophomore Hannah McKinney of Des Moines led three players in double figures with 20 points in the loss to SENEB. Sophomore Taelor Lessmeier of Fort Dodge finished with 14 points and freshman Jada Powell of Des Moines recorded a double-double with 12 points and 14 rebounds, including 10 defensive rebounds.

 

The two teams were tied at 16 at the end of the first quarter and DMACC held a 35-30 advantage at halftime. The Bears led 55-52 at the end of the third quarter.

 

DMACC shot 36 percent in the loss, connecting on 25 of 70 field goal attempts. The Bears were 8-of-26 from three-point range and made 14 of 18 free throw attempts.

 

SENEB came away with a 47-43 advantage on the boards with Powell's 14 rebounds leading DMACC. Freshman Riley Gatton of Montezuma had six rebounds and McKinney and Lessmeier had five apiece. Powell and sophomore Cailey Schaa of Council Bluffs had three assists apiece and Lessmeier topped the Bears in steals with six.

 

Gatton scored 14 points, Schaa had 13 and freshman Katie Scott of Polk City added 11 in DMACC's loss to CNEBCC. The Bears led at the quarter, 15-14, and had a 32-28 advantage at halftime. CNEBCC claimed a 49-47 advantage at the end of the third quarter.

 

The Bears shot 31 percent, hitting 22 of 71 field goal attempts. They were 12-of-30 from three-point range and 8-of-13 from the free throw line.

 

CNEBCC had a 48-33 advantage on the boards with Powell's eight rebounds leading DMACC. Lessmeier added six rebounds and Schaa and Lessmeier topped the Bears in assists with three apiece. Lessmeier also had three steals.

 

The DMACC women's basketball team will host the Mount Mercy University junior varsity Nov. 12 inside the DMACC gymnasium. Game time is 5:30 p.m.
