Gatton, Mena lead DMACC women's basketball team to season-opening win

Freshman Riley Gatton of Montezuma and sophomore Asia Mena of Chicago, Ill., scored 14 points apiece to lead the Des Moines Area Community College (DMACC) women's basketball team to a 65-57 season-opening win over the William Penn University junior Varsity (WPUJV) November 2 inside the DMACC gymnasium.

 

Freshman Jada Powell of Des Moines joined Gatton and Mena in double figures with 12 points and recorded a double-double with 10 rebounds.

 

DMACC led throughout the game. The Bears were up 14-13 at the quarter, 32-24 at halftime and 45-39 at the end of the third quarter. The Bears shot 38 percent, hitting 24 of 64 field goal attempts. They were 8-of-27 from three-point range and connected on nine of 15 free throw attempts.

 

WPUJV had a 52-42 advantage on the boards.

 

Freshman Katie Scott of Polk City led DMACC in assists with four and sophomore Hannah McKinney of Des Moines had three steals. Sophomore Taelor Lessmeier of Fort Dodge recorded four blocked shots.

 

The DMACC women's basketball team will host the Graceland University junior varsity today. Game time is 5:30 p.m. inside the DMACC gymnasium
