DMACC's Aliyah Robinson named to NJCAA Region XI First Team

Des Moines Area Community College (DMACC) women's basketball player sophomore Aliyah Robinson of Waterloo has been named to the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Region XI All-Tournament First Team.

 

Sophomores Grace Stalzer of Zearing and Ellie Horn of Newton earned second-team honors and freshman Asia Mena of Chicago, Ill., received honorable mention recognition.

 

Robinson led the Bears in scoring with a 12.5 average. She shot 36 percent from the field, hitting 127 of 352 field goal attempts. Robinson was 61-of-192 from three-point range for 32 percent and made 61 of 80 free throw attempts for 76 percent. She scored 376 points for the season. Robinson's season also included 140 rebounds, including 100 defensive rebounds, 87 assists and 59 steals.

 

Stalzer led the Bears in rebounding with 269 rebounds, including 198 defensive. She averaged nine rebounds a game and ranked second in the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC) in rebounding. Stalzer scored 249 points and averaged 8.3 points a game. She shot 43 percent from the field, hitting 93 of 218 field goal attempts. She was 8-of-30 from three-point range for 27 percent and made 55 of 69 free throws for 80 percent. Stalzer's season also included 38 assists and 26 steals.

 

Horn led the ICCAC in blocked shots with 54, averaging 1.8 blocks per game. She was also second to Stalzer in rebounding with 118 rebounds, averaging 6.6 rebounds a game. Horn also averaged 9.6 points a game. She shot 48 percent from the field, hitting 126 of 264 field goal attempts, and made 37 of 101 free throws for 37 percent. Horn's season also included 16 assists and 13 steals.

 

Mena was DMACC's No. 3 scorer with 278 points on the season, averaging 9.6 points a game. She shot 44 percent from the field, hitting 107 of 245 field goal attempts. Mena was 24-of-64 from three-point range for 38 percent and made 40 of 72 free throw attempts for 56 percent. Mena led the Bears in assists with 119, averaging 4.1 assists a game. Her season also included 105 rebounds, including 77 defensive rebounds, and 59 steals.

 

The DMACC women's basketball team ended the season with a 68-60 loss to Kirkwood Community College (KCC) in the semifinals of the NJCAA Region XI Division II Women's Basketball Championship. The Bears were 16-15 for the season and 10-6 in the ICCAC, finishing third.
