Horn gets double-double as DMACC women's basketball team tops SECC in Region XI play

Sophomore Ellie Horn of Newton recorded a double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds to lead the Des Moines Area Community College (DMACC) women's basketball team to a 73-70 win over Southeastern Community College (SECC) in the first round of the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division II Women's Basketball Championship March 6 inside the DMACC gymnasium.

 

Freshman Asia Mena of Chicago, Ill., scored 11 points and sophomores Grace Stalzer of Zearing and Aliyah Robinson of Waterloo and freshman Sameria Jackson of Houston, Texas, had 10 points apiece as the Bears defeated SECC for the second time in three meetings this season.

 

The Bears, seeded third, overcame a 12-point halftime deficit to improve to 16-14 for the season. They trailed 15-11 at the end of the first quarter and 40-28 at halftime. DMACC outscored the Black Hawks 21-9 in the third period to tie the game at 49 heading into the fourth quarter.

 

DMACC shot 43 percent, hitting 26 of 60 field goal attempts. The Bears were 6-of-19 from three-point range and 15-of-28 from the free throw line.

 

DMACC came away with a 48-38 advantage on the boards behind Horn's 11 rebounds. Stalzer narrowly missed a double-double with nine rebounds, Jackson had eight and Robinson pulled down seven. Mena dished out a team-high nine assists and Robinson came away with four. Sophomore Emma Rouse of Boone led the Bears in steals with three.

 

The DMACC women's basketball team will face second-seeded Kirkwood Community College (KCC) in the Region XI semifinals March 9 at Mason City. KCC defeated Southwestern Community College (SWCC), 87-49, in another first-round game. The Eagles defeated DMACC in both regular season matchups, 66-37 Jan. 9 at Cedar Rapids and 76-63 Feb. 21 inside the DMACC gymnasium.

 

The championship game will be played March 10 at Mason City.
