Bears drop 73-71 decision to Southeastern

Sophomore Ellie Horn of Newton scored 22 points, grabbed eight rebounds and blocked four shots as the Des Moines Area Community College (DMACC) women's basketball team dropped a 73-71 game to Southeastern Community College (SECC) December 8 at Keokuk.

 

The Bears let a 39-26 halftime advantage slip away as they fell to 6-7 for the season and 1-1 in the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC). Freshman Shailece Porter of Walthill, Neb., also reached double figures for DMACC, scoring 10 points, and sophomore Aliyah Robinson of Waterloo and freshman Asia Mena of Chicago, Ill., tallied eight points apiece.

 

The Bears had a 15-13 lead at the end of the first quarter and outscored SECC 24-13 in the second period for their 13-point advantage at halftime. DMACC led 55-47 at the end of the third quarter.

 

DMACC shot 49 percent in the loss, connecting on 29 of 59 field goal attempts. The Bears were 7-of-16 from three-point range and made seven of 15 free throw attempts.

 

Horn's eight rebounds and eight from sophomore Grace Stalzer of Zearing lifted DMACC to a 41-38 advantage on the boards. Freshman Sameria Jackson of Houston, Texas, came away with six rebounds and Robinson and sophomore Emma Rouse of Boone had five rebounds apiece. Rouse, Robinson and Mena dished out four assists apiece and Mena and Stalzer had two steals each.

 

The DMACC women's basketball team will face Kansas City (Kan.) Community College (KCKCC) Dec. 14 at Kansas City, Kan. The Bears dropped a 79-52 game to KCKCC Nov. 13 inside the DMACC gymnasium.
