DMACC women's basketball team tops SWCC in conference opener

Team Bench reacts on huge play

Sophomore Ellie Horn of Newton scored 18 points and grabbed nine rebounds as the Des Moines Area Community College (DMACC) women's basketball team opened Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC) play with an 81-76 win over Southwestern Community College (SWCC) December 5 inside the DMACC gymnasium.

 

Freshman Asia Mena of Chicago, Ill., had 16 points and sophomore Emma Rouse of Boone finished with 14 as the Bears improved to 6-6 for the season.

 

The game was close all the way. DMACC led 15-14 at the end of the first quarter and trailed, 30-28, at halftime. The Bears had a 55-53 advantage at the end of the third quarter.

 

DMACC shot 39 percent in the win, hitting 28 of 71 field goal attempts. The Bears were 9-of-24 from three-point range and 16-of-21 from the free throw line.

 

SWCC came away with a 48-40 advantage on the boards with sophomore Grace Stalzer of Zearing grabbing 12 rebounds to lead DMACC. Sophomore Aliyah Robinson of Waterloo dished out five assists and Mena had four assists and four steals. Horn led the Bears in blocked shots with two.

 

The DMACC women's basketball team will face Southeastern Community College (SECC) Dec. 8 at Keokuk. SECC is 9-3 overall and 1-0 in the ICCAC.
