DMACC women's basketball team suffers two losses in Emerson Classic

The Des Moines Area Community College (DMACC) women's basketball team fell to 3-5 for the season following a pair of losses in the Emerson Classic November 16 and 17 at Marshalltown.

 

The Bears dropped a 74-65 decision to Moberly Area Community College (MACC) in their tournament opener on Nov. 16 and fell to Central (Neb.) Community College (CNEBCC), 71-56, on Nov. 17.

 

Freshman Shailece Porter of Walthill, Neb., scored 21 points and sophomore Grace Stalzer of Zearing had 10 to pace DMACC in its loss to MACC. The Bears trailed 33-14 at the end of the first quarter, 43-31 at halftime and 63-49 at the end of the third quarter. Sophomore Emma Rouse of Boone scored nine points for DMACC and freshman Asia Mena of Chicago, Ill., sophomore Aliyah Robinson of Waterloo had eight apiece.

 

DMACC shot 38 percent, hitting 26 of 68 field goal attempts. The Bears were 7-of-27 from three-point range and 6-of-8 from the free throw line.

 

Stalzer and Mena had eight rebounds apiece and Porter and sophomore Ellie Horn of Newton pulled down six apiece as DMACC tallied 41 rebounds in the loss. Mena dished out five assists, Porter came away with four and Robinson had three. Mena and Robinson led the Bears in steals with three apiece.

 

Stalzer scored 13 points, Robinson had nine and Porter and freshman Sameria Jackson of Houston, Texas, finished with seven points apiece in DMACC's loss to CNEBCC. The Bears trailed 14-6 at the end of the first quarter, 38-29 at halftime and 48-45 at the end of the third quarter.

 

DMACC connected on 22 of 64 field goal attempts for 34 percent. The Bears were 6-of-22 from three-point range and 6-of-12 from the free throw line.

 

DMACC grabbed 36 rebounds in the game with Robinson getting eight, Jackson coming away with seven and Porter grabbing six. Robinson had four assists in the game and Mena and Rouse finished with three apiece. Stalzer and Jackson led the Bears in steals with three apiece.

The DMACC women's basketball team will face Black Hawk College-Moline Nov. 20 at Moline, Ill.
