DMACC women's basketball team falls to NENEB, defeats MMUJV in Hawks Classic

The Des Moines Area Community College (DMACC) women's basketball team dropped a 102-61 decision to Northeast (Neb.) Community College (NENEB) and defeated the Mount Marty University junior varsity (MMUJV), 93-80, in the Hawks Classic November 9 and 10 at Norfolk, Neb.

 

The split gives the Bears a 3-2 record for the season.

 

Sophomore Aliyah Robinson of Waterloo scored 11 points, sophomore Taylor Abernathy of Chicago, Ill., tallied nine and sophomore Emma Rouse of Boone and freshman Shailece Porter of Walthill, Neb., had seven points apiece in DMACC's loss to NENEB.

 

NENEB was up 28-12 at the end of the first quarter and led 48-23 at halftime. The Hawks had a 72-41 advantage at the end of the third quarter.

 

DMACC shot 32 percent in the loss, making 21 of 66 field goal attempts. The Bears were 10-of-31 from three-point range and made nine of 12 free throw attempts.

 

NENEB came away with a 47-35 advantage on the boards with sophomore Grace Stalzer of Zearing getting eight rebounds to lead the Bears. Freshmen Asia Mena of Chicago, Ill., and Jadyn Shonka of Nora Springs had three assists and two steals apiece.

 

Robinson scored a season-high 33 points and Rouse and Mena finished with 17 and 12 points respectively in DMACC's win over MMUJV. The Bears trailed 17-16 at the end of the first quarter, 46-45 at halftime and 67-65 at the end of the third quarter before coming away with the win.

 

Robinson made 13 of 18 field goal attempts and was 7-of-11 from three-point range.

 

DMACC shot 51 percent, hitting 37 of 72 field goal attempts. The Bears were 15-of-33 from three-point range and made four of 11 free throw attempts.

 

DMACC had a 37-33 advantage on the boards with Stalzer getting eight rebounds to go with nine points. Freshman Sameria Jackson of Houston, Texas, had six rebounds and Mena finished with five. Mena dished out 10 assists in the win and Rouse came away with seven. Robinson led DMACC in steals with three and sophomore Ellie Horn of Newton scored eight points and blocked four shots.

 

The DMACC women's basketball team will host Kansas City (Kan.) Community College (KCKAN) Nov. 13 inside the DMACC gymnasium. Game time is 5 p.m. KCKAN is ranked seventh in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division II poll.
