Graceland University JV hands DMACC women's basketball team its first loss of the season

The Des Moines Area Community College (DMACC) women's basketball team suffered its first loss of the season when the Graceland University junior varsity (GUJV) defeated the Bears, 64-59, November 6 inside the DMACC gymnasium.

 

DMACC, which fell to 2-1 for the season, trailed 17-16 at the end of the first quarter, but gained a 29-25 advantage at halftime. GUJV had a 42-39 lead at the end of the third quarter.

 

Freshman Asia Mena of Chicago, Ill., led DMACC with 15 points and sophomore Grace Stalzer of Zearing and freshman Shailece Porter of Walthill, Neb., finished with 11 points apiece. The Bears shot 33 percent, hitting 23 of 70 field goal attempts. They were 6-of-24 from three-point range and 7-of-15 from the free throw line.

 

Stalzer had a double-double with 12 rebounds, lifting DMACC to a 42-39 advantage on the boards. Freshman Sameria Jackson of Houston, Texas, had eight rebounds and Porter led the Bears in assists with four. Stalzer topped DMACC in steals with three.

 

The DMACC women's basketball team will play in the Hawks Classic Nov. 9 and 10 at Norfolk, Neb. The Bears will play Northeast (Neb.) Community College (NENEB) on Nov. 9 and will face the Mount Marty College junior varsity (MMCJV) on Nov. 10
