DMACC Women Falls to Kirkwood in Regular Season Finale, 70-4

The Des Moines Area Community College (DMACC) women's basketball team closed out the 2017-18 regular season with a 70-46 loss to Kirkwood Community College (KCC) March 3 inside the DMACC gymnasium.

 

The Bears ended the regular season at 20-11 overall and 7-7 in the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC). Sophomore Molly Mitchell of Okoboji and freshman Deja Davis of Omaha, Neb., led the way with nine and eight points respectively. Sophomores Regan Shockley of Hartley and Beth Atwood of Packwood scored seven points apiece.

 

KCC, the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division II defending national champion and winner of 18 consecutive games, led throughout the game in capturing the ICCAC title at 14-0. The Eagles led 23-10 at the end of the first quarter and were ahead 42-23 at halftime. They had a 56-37 lead at the end of the third quarter.

 

DMACC shot 29 percent in the loss, hitting 16 of 55 field goal attempts. The Bears were 3-of-19 from three-point range and 11-of-17 from the free throw line.

 

KCC had a 39-36 advantage on the boards with Atwood's nine rebounds leading DMACC. Mitchell and freshman Grace Stalzer of Zearing had six rebounds apiece. Shockley and freshman Emma Rouse of Boone led the Bears in assists with three apiece and Mitchell topped DMACC in steals with two.

 

The DMACC women's basketball team will face Southeastern Community College (SECC) in the quarterfinals of the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Region XI Division II Women's Basketball Tournament March 7 at Keokuk. Game time is 7 p.m. SECC finished the regular season at 21-9 overall and 8-6 in the ICCAC. The two teams split their regular-season series. DMACC won by a 73-61 score Jan. 20 inside the DMACC gymnasium and SECC took an 85-66 decision Feb. 17 at Keokuk.
