Kirkwood Hands DMACC Women's Basketball Team an 84-45 Loss

Kirkwood Community College (KCC) opened up a 24-9 lead at the end of the first quarter and coasted to an 84-45 win over the Des Moines Area Community College (DMACC) women's basketball team February 3 at Cedar Rapids.

 

The Eagles, ranked second in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division II poll, had a 44-23 advantage at halftime and led 61-40 at the end of three quarters as they improved to 21-3 overall and 7-0 in the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC).

 

DMACC, ranked 14th in NJCAA Division II, fell to 17-6 and 5-2.

 

Freshman Taylor Abernathy of Chicago, Ill., led the Bears with nine points and sophomore Regan Shockley of Hartley and freshmen Eliyah Robinson of Waterloo and Emma Rouse of Boone scored eight points apiece.

 

DMACC shot 28 percent in the loss, hitting 14 of 50 field goal attempts. The Bears were 7-of-27 from three-point range and made 10 of 18 free throw attempts.

 

KCC had a 35-22 advantage on the boards with freshman Deja Davis of Omaha, Neb., leading DMACC with five rebounds. Sophomore Beth Atwood of Packwood and freshman Grace Stalzer of Zearing had four rebounds apiece and Rouse topped the Bears in assists and steals with four each.

 

The DMACC women's basketball team will face Marshalltown Community College (MCC) February 7 at Marshalltown. The Bears defeated MCC 76-42 when the two teams played Nov. 18 inside the DMACC gymnasium. MCC is 8-16 overall and 0-3 in Division I of the ICCAC.
