DMACC's Molly Mitchell Named ICCAC Athlete of the Week

The Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC) has named Des Moines Area Community College (DMACC) women's basketball player Molly Mitchell the ICCAC Athlete of the Week for Division II women's basketball for the week of January 22 to 28.

 

Mitchell, a sophomore from Okoboji, is the third DMACC women's basketball player to be honored by the ICCAC this season. Sophomore Beth Atwood of Packwood has earned the honor twice, the weeks of Oct. 21 to Nov. 5 and Jan. 15 to 21, and sophomore Joniqua Clark of Cedar Rapids has also received the honor twice, the weeks of Nov. 27 to Dec. 3 and Dec. 11 to 17.

 

Mitchell scored 55 points and pulled down 30 rebounds as the Bears defeated Southwestern Community College (SWCC), 71-55, on Jan. 24 and North Iowa Area Community College (NIACC), 91-83, on Jan. 27. NIACC was ranked 10th in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division II poll when the Trojans were upset by DMACC.

 

Mitchell scored 23 points in the win over SWCC, hitting 10 of 15 shots from the field, and she was 11-of-13 from the field and scored 32 points in the win over NIACC.

 

With the two wins, DMACC has moved into 14th place in the NJCAA Division II poll. The Bears are 17-4 overall and 5-0 in the ICCAC.

 

Mitchell leads DMACC in scoring and rebounding, averaging 13.5 points and 9.9 rebounds a game. She also leads Division II of the ICCAC in rebounding.

 

Mitchell, who has scored 270 points this season, is shooting 49 percent from the field (102-of-208) and 69 percent from the free throw line (65-of-94). She has 198 rebounds, including 132 defensive rebounds, 33 assists, 26 steals and 25 blocked shots.

 

The DMACC women's basketball team will host Iowa Central Community College (ICCC) today. Game time is 5:30 p.m. inside the DMACC gymnasium. ICCC is 10-11 overall and 2-3 in the ICCAC.
