DMACC Women's Basketball Team Splits Two Games in Emerson Classic

The Des Moines Area Community College (DMACC) women's basketball team came away with a loss and a win in the Emerson Classic November 17 and 18 at Marshalltown.

 

The Bears opened the tournament with a 60-46 loss to Moberly Area Community College (MACC) on Nov. 17 and then recorded a 93-54 win over Central (Neb.) Community College (CCC) on Nov. 18 to improve to 5-2 for the season.

 

Sophomore Alee Ira of Altoona scored 12 points and sophomore Molly Mitchell of Okoboji finished with 10 points in DMACC's loss to MACC. The Bears led 16-8 at the quarter, but MACC battled back to a 27-27 tie at halftime and then led 43-36 after three quarters.

 

DMACC shot 27 percent in the loss, hitting 14 of 52 field goal attempts. The Bears were six of 18 from three-point range and 12-of-24 from the free throw line.

 

Mitchell's 16 rebounds gave her a double-double as DMACC came away with a 48-33 advantage on the boards. Sophomore Beth Atwood of Packwood had 13 rebounds in the loss. Freshman Deja Davis of Omaha, Neb., led DMACC in assists with three and Mitchell topped the Bears in steals with five.

 

Sophomore Regan Shockley of Hartley scored 16 points, Atwood finished with 13 and Davis added 11 to lead DMACC past CCC. The Bears led 16-11 at the end of the first quarter and used a 33-point second quarter to open up a 49-25 advantage at halftime. DMACC led 71-33 at the end of three quarters.

 

The Bears shot 49 percent in the win, making 35 of 71 field goal attempts, including 7-of-17 from three-point range. They were 16-of-19 from the free throw line.

 

Mitchell grabbed nine rebounds and Atwood and freshman Ellie Horn of Newton had eight apiece as DMACC won the battle of the boards, 47-46. Sophomore Joniqua Clark of Cedar Rapids dished out 11 assists in the win and Ira led the Bears in steals with four.

 

The DMACC women's basketball team will host Little Priest Tribal (LPT) today at 5:30 p.m. inside the DMACC gymnasium. The Bears defeated LPT 72-58 when the two teams played Nov. 1 at Winnebago, Neb.
