DMACC Women's Basketball Team Splits Two Gams in Hawks Classic

The Des Moines Area Community College (DMACC) women's basketball team came away with a win and a loss in the Hawks Classic November 10 and 11 at Norfolk, Neb.

 

The Bears pushed their winning streak to four games with an 87-66 win over North Platte Community College (NPCC) on Nov. 10, and then dropped a 72-52 decision to Northeast (Neb.) Community College (NECC) on Nov. 11.

 

The split give DMACC a 4-1 record for the season.

 

Sophomore Molly Mitchell of Okoboji led five players in double figures with 19 points in the Bears' win over NPCC. Sophomores Beth Atwood of Packwood and Regan Shockley of Hartley had 17 and 14 points respectively and freshmen Aliyah Robinson of Waterloo and Deja Davis of Omaha, Neb., scored 10 points apiece.

 

DMACC led throughout the game. The Bears had a 28-14 lead at the end of the first quarter and led 46-29 at halftime. DMACC was up 64-41 after three quarters.

The Bears shot 40 percent in the win, making 23 of 58 field goal attempts, including 4-of-14 from three-point range. Shockley made all 11 of her free throw attempts as DMACC went 37-of-42 from the free throw line.

 

Atwood and Davis collected double-doubles with 15 and 10 rebounds respectively as the Bears came away with a 56-36 advantage in rebounding. Shockley and Robinson dished out five and four assists respectively and led the Bears in steals with two apiece.

 

DMACC got 13 points and three assists from Robinson and 11 points from Shockley in its loss to NECC.

 

NECC led 28-14 after the first quarter, 50-30 advantage at halftime and 62-38 after three quarters.

 

DMACC shot just 32 percent in the loss, making 17 of 54 field goal attempts. The Bears were 3-of-8 from three-point range and 15-of-29 from the free throw line.

 

NECC had a 43-36 advantage on the boards with Davis and Mitchell getting seven rebounds apiece to lead the Bears. Davis also topped the team in steals with five.

 

The DMACC women's basketball team will play in the Emerson Classic Nov. 17 and 18 at Marshalltown. The Bears will play Moberly Area Community College (MACC) on Nov. 17 and will face Central Community College-Columbus (CCCC) on Nov. 18.
