DMACC softball team takes doubleheader from NECC
  • DMACC takes the first game, 3-2
  • Bears win the nightcap, 12-1, in five innings
  • Freshmen Jacki Baas and Kierra Jungers get the wins

Freshmen Jacki Baas of Bondurant and Kierra Jungers of Fonda each picked up a victory as the DMACC softball team won both games of a doubleheader against Northeast (Neb.) Community College (NECC) April 23 at Norfolk, Neb.

Baas improved to 16-1 with a 3-2 win in the first game and Jungers ran her record to 21-1 with a 12-1 win the second game and pushed its current winning streak to eight games. The second game was called because of the mercy rule after the Hawks batted in the bottom of the fifth inning.

DMACC, which moved from seventh to fourth in this week's Division II poll from the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA), took a 1-0 lead in the second inning of the first game but fell behind 2-1 after the Hawks scored twice in the bottom of the inning. The Bears answered with two runs in the top of the fourth and Baas kept NECC off the scoreboard the rest of the way. She allowed two runs on eight hits and struck out nine.

Freshman Jasey Anderson of Estherville homered and singled and drove in all three DMACC runs. Freshman Macee Reilling of Dallas Center, also had two hits, including a double, and the Bears got another double from sophomore Josie McCuddin of Truro.

The Bears scored five runs in the first inning, three in the fourth and four in the fifth in winning the second game. NECC tallied its lone run in the bottom of the fourth.

DMACC collected 12 hits in the win, three from sophomore Hilary Wilson of Solon and two each by freshmen Ella Husak of Polk City, Bri Tigges of Urbandale and Mia Trewin of Waukee. The Bears got two doubles from Wilson and one each from Tigges, Reilling and Trewin.

Wilson led DMACC in RBIs with three and Tigges and Trewin drove in two runs apiece.

Jungers allowed one run on two hits and struck out seven.

The DMACC softball team will close out the regular season with doubleheaders against Ellsworth Community College (ECC) April 26 at Iowa Falls and Iowa Lakes Community College (ILCC) April 27 at Estherville. The Bears swept both teams in doubleheaders earlier this season.

DMACC's 22-2 record in the ICCAC is good for a three-game lead over Iowa Central Community College (ICCC).
