The DMACC softball team ran its record to 28-3 overall and 8-2 in the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC) with a pair of lopsided wins over North Iowa Area Community College (NIACC) April 4 at Mason City.
The Bears, ranked third in this week's Division II poll from the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA), swept the Trojans by scores of 30-1 and 29-0. DMACC scored 15 runs in the first inning of reach game and coasted to the wins. Both games were called after five innings because of the mercy rule.
The Bears banged out 47 hits in the two wins, including nine doubles and 11 home runs. Freshmen Madison Kearns of Glenpool, Okla., Kendal Clark of Humboldt and Anna Snyder of Cedar Rapids had doubles in the opener and sophomore Sami Miller of Mason City and freshman Sydney Kennedy of Peosta and Bailey Donohoe of West Branch homered. Miller led the Bears in RBIs with eight, Kennedy drove in seven runs, Clark had five RBIs and Donohoe, sophomore Jada Collins of Des Moines, sophomore Delaney Kelley of Rock Island, Ill., and freshman Zoey Hightshoe of Boone drove in two runs apiece.
Freshman Emma Dighton threw the first three innings for the Bears and improved to 7-1 with the win. She allowed one run on two hits and struck out seven. Kennedy pitched the last two innings, giving up two hits and striking out two.
Collins, Clark, Kelley and freshman Emily Ades of Boone each doubled in the second game with Kearns and freshman Kaylynne Salyars of Muscatine hitting two home runs apiece. Dighton, Clark, Miller and sophomore Lexi Lander of Onawa also homered in the win. Dighton and Salyars led the Bears in RBIs with five apiece, Clark drove in four runs, Miller and Kelley each had three RBIs and Kearns, Lander and sophomore Sara Keeler of Creston drove in two runs apiece.
Sophomore Abby Flanagan of Coggon stayed undefeated at 9-0 with the win. She went three innings, allowed three hits and struck out six. Sophomore Ellie Jacobson of Humboldt pitched two hitless innings and struck out three batters.
DMACC and NIACC will meet again in another doubleheader April 6 at the DMACC Softball Complex.
