The DMACC softball team ran its record to 18-1 after sweeping a doubleheader from Johnson County Community College (JCCC) March 16 at Overland Park, Kan.
The Bears, ranked first in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division II poll, took the opener by an 8-2 score and won the second game, 4-0. JCCC is ranked eighth in NJCAA Division II.
Freshman Kendal Clark of Humboldt collected a pair of hits, including her seventh home run of the season, and drove in five runs to lead DMACC to its win in the opener. JCCC took a 1-0 lead in the second inning, but the Bears went up 2-1 with single runs in the third and fourth innings. JCCC tied it with a run in the bottom of the fourth before the Bears pulled away behind a six-run sixth inning.
Sophomore Abby Husak of Polk City went 5-for-5 as she and Clark accounted for seven of DMACC's nine hits. Freshman Madison Kearns of Glenpool, Okla., and sophomore Sami Miller of Mason City drove in one run apiece.
Sophomore Abby Flanagan of Coggon went the distance and improved to 5-0 with the win. She allowed two runs on six hits, struck out nine and walked one.
Miller and sophomore Delaney Kelley of Rock Island, Ill., had two hits apiece, including a double by Miller, to lead DMACC in the second game. Miller drove in two runs and Kearns and freshman Emma Dighton of Boone had one RBI apiece.
DMACC took a 1-0 lead in the first, went up 2-0 with a run in the second and added two insurance runs in the fifth.
Dighton threw the first six innings and ran her record to 5-0 with the win. She allowed three hits and struck out four. Sophomore Lexi Lander of Onawa pitched one inning and struck out two of the three batters she faced.
The DMACC softball team will begin play in the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC) with doubleheaders against Kirkwood Community College (KCC) March 19 and 20 at the DMACC softball diamond. The doubleheaders start at 1 p.m. on March 19 and at noon on March 20. KCC is 10-6 for the season and is ranked seventh in NJCAA Division II.
