Fifth ranked Bears take pair from Labette

The Des Moines Area Community College (DMACC) softball team improved to 10-3 for the season with a doubleheader sweep of Labette Community College (LCC) March 18 at Parsons, Kan.

 

The Bears, ranked fifth in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division II poll, won by scores of 8-0 and 6-3. The first game was called after five innings because of the mercy rule.

 

Freshman Josie Swafford of Wellston, Okla., tossed a four-hitter and drove in a pair of runs to pace the Bears in the opener. DMACC led 1-0 after two innings and opened up a 5-0 lead with four runs in the third. The Bears closed out the scoring with two runs in the fourth and one in the fifth.

 

Sophomore Mia Ruther of Burlington and freshman Maddie Karr of Center Point had three hits apiece, including a home run by Karr, and sophomore Avery Guy of Cedar Rapids joined Swafford with two RBIs in the win. Freshman Morgan Lewis of Cedar Rapids had a pair of hits and Lewis, Karr and freshman Ellie Dixon of Iowa City drove in one run apiece.

 

Swafford struck out nine batters and did not issue a base on balls in coming away with the win.

 

Freshman Ally Anderson of Atlantic allowed eight hits and belted a home run to lift DMACC in the second game. The Bears trailed 1-0 after the first inning, but tied the game with a run in the fourth and took a 6-0 lead with five runs in the sixth. LCC made it respectable with one run in each of the sixth and seventh innings.

 

Guy, Anderson and freshman Elly Schuemann of Marion had two hits apiece, including a home run by Guy, who collected a pair of RBIs in the win. Lewis, Anderson, Schuemann and Dixon drove in one run apiece.

 

Anderson gave up three runs, struck out two and walked one.

 

The DMACC softball team will face Neosho County Community College (NCCC) in a doubleheader today at Chanute, Kan.
