DMACC softball team dominates ACCC in doubleheader sweep

The DMACC softball team outscored Allen County Community College (ACCC) 34-3 in sweeping a doubleheader March 17 at Iola, Kan.

 

Game scores 18-0 and 16-3.

 

The Bears, ranked fifth in the March 12 Division II poll from the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA), improved to 8-3 with the wins.

 

Sophomore Mia Ruther of Burlington was 5-for-5 with a double and sophomore Avery Guy of Cedar Rapids and freshman Maddie Karr of Center Point drove in four runs apiece for DMACC in the opener, The game was called after five innings because of the mercy rule.

 

The Bears scored six runs in the top of the first, added two runs in the second, five in the third, two in the fourth and closed out the game with three runs in the fifth.

 

Karr had three hits, including her second home run of the season, and Guy, sophomore Ellie Dixon of Iowa City and freshmen Morgan Lewis of Cedar Rapids and Jayci Vos of Monroe had two hits apiece. Ruther, freshman Ally Pickering of Winterset and Vos each drove in two runs.

 

Sophomore Kaisha Wells of Topeka, Kan., and freshman Johanna Diw of Perry also homered for DMACC.

 

Freshman Josie Swafford of Wellston, Okla., pitched all five innings and picked up her third win of the season against one loss. She allowed four hits, struck out eight and walked one.

 

Karr had three hits and drove in six runs for the Bears in the second game. DMACC led 3-1 after the first inning and 5-3 after three innings. The Bears opened up an 8-3 lead with three runs in the fourth and put the game away with two runs in the sixth and six runs in the seventh.

 

Lewis paced DMACC's 13-hit attack with four hits and Guy and Dixon had two hits apiece. Lewis and Pickering each drove in two runs.

Sophomore Peyton Parker of La Porte City pitched the first five innings and improved to 2-2 with the win. She allowed three runs on four hits, struck out three and walked two. Freshman Ally Anderson of Atlantic pitched two innings, allowing one hit and striking out two batters.

 

The DMACC softball team will face Labette Community College (LCC) in a doubleheader today at Parsons, Kan.
