Bears Improve to 28-0 with sweep of Iowa Lakes

The Des Moines Area Community College (DMACC) softball team ran its record to 28-0 overall and 10-0 in the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC) with a sweep of Iowa Lakes Community College (ILCC) April 12 at the DMACC softball diamond.

The Bears took the opener, 11-0, behind another no-hitter from sophomore Molly Jacobsen of Adel and won the nightcap, 4-3, with a run in the bottom of the seventh inning. The first game was called because of the mercy rule after ILCC batted in the top of the fifth.

Freshmen Morgan Nealey of Urbandale and Kaisha Wells of Topeka, Kan., each homered and Wells finished with five runs batted in for DMACC in the opener. The Bears took a 4-0 lead in the first inning and all but put the game out of reach with six runs in the bottom of the second.

Nealey, Wells and sophomore Bailey Richards of Des Moines had two hits apiece and sophomore Bre Hunter of Boone and Nealey drove in two runs each.

Jacobsen faced 16 batters in improving to 13-0 for the season. She struck out 10 and threw 49 pitches, including 39 strikes.

Nealey also homered in the second game and drove in a pair of runs to help DMACC to the win. The Bears trailed 3-0 after three innings, but drew even with a run in the fourth and two in the fifth. They put the game in the win column with a run in the bottom of the seventh.

Freshman Mia Ruther of Burlington paced DMACC's 9-hit attack with three hits, including a double, and Nealey came away with two hits.

Freshman Taylor Graven of Greene pitched the first three innings for DMACC, allowing three runs on six hits. She struck out five and walked one. Sophomore Gabby Schnathorst of Carlisle worked two innings and struck out three batters and Jacobsen worked the sixth and seventh innings, allowing one hit and striking out three hitters. She was credited with the win, her 14th of the season.

The DMACC softball team will face the Simpson College junior varsity in a doubleheader April 18 at the DMACC softball diamond.
