The Des Moines Area Community College (DMACC) softball team stayed unbeaten for the 2018 season and ran its winning streak to 16 games by sweeping a doubleheader from Southeastern Community College (SECC) March 22 at West Burlington.

Sophomore Molly Jacobsen of Adel pitched the Bears to an 8-0 win in the opener and sophomore Gabby Schnathorst of Carlisle picked up the victory as DMACC took the second game, 5-1.

The Bears entered the series ranked second in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division II poll. DMACC broke a scoreless tie with five runs in the third inning and capped the win with three runs in the sixth.

Jacobsen notched her seventh win of the season on a one-hitter. She recorded 14 strikeouts while facing just 19 batters in the six-inning game.

Freshman Morgan Nealey of Urbandale led the Bears at the plate, hitting a home run and driving in three runs. Jacobsen and sophomore Taylor Briley of Creston each doubled and had one RBI apiece and freshmen Avery Guy of Cedar Rapids, Mia Ruther of Burlington and Kisha Wells of Topeka, Kan., drove in one run apiece.

Schnathorst pitched a three-hitter in getting her third win of the season. She worked the first five innings, allowing a run on three hits with one walk. Freshman Peyton Parker of La Porte City pitched two hitless innings and struck out one batter.

Schnathorst helped her one cause with a home run and four RBIs. Freshman Jayci Vos of Monroe had three hits in the win and Ruther came away with a pair of singles. Sophomore Bre Hunter of Boone drove in DMACC's other run.

The DMACC softball team is idle until March 28 when the Bears host the Simpson College junior varsity. The doubleheader begins at 1 p.m. at the DMACC softball diamond.
