Des Moines Area Community College (DMACC) men’s basketball coach John Bowler has announced the addition of Kannon Burrage as an assistant coach.

 

Burrage, who played for the Bears from 2009 to 2011, began his duties July 2. He returns to DMACC after completing a five-year professional playing career.

 

“We are honored to have Kannon return to the program,” Bowler said. “He brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to the program from having successfully played at junior college, NCAA Division I and professional levels. His dedication to the tradition and values within our program fit perfectly with what we are looking for.”

 

During his time at DMACC, Burrage, a native of East Moline, Ill., helped lead the Bears to a 45-15 record. He was a two-time Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC) all-conference player, being named to the first team in his sophomore season after leading the league in scoring with a 20.7 average.

 

Burrage said he was honored to be named an assistant men’s basketball coach at DMACC.

 

“I’d like to thank Coach Bowler and our athletic director, B.J. McGinn, for giving me this opportunity,” Burrage said. “From being a former student here, I’m well aware of the great tradition of success that we’ve established and now I look forward to joining a staff that will enable us to build on that tradition. My goal from day one will be to recruit, develop and coach champions on the court, in the classroom and in the community.”

 

Burrage transferred to the University of Texas-San Antonio following his DMACC career. He averaged 15.4 points, 4.9 rebounds and 1.3 assists a game during his two-year stint at UTSA, earning two all-conference selections.

 

After graduation from UTSA, Burrage played professionally in Slovenia, Singapore, Thailand and Australia. He was named the Most Valuable Player of the Singapore Basketball League in 2015.

 

Burrage has been active in his hometown since leaving DMACC and UTSA. In 2015, he started United We Ball, an organization designed to build stronger relationships between local law enforcement and the communities they serve through sports. One of the events is called Hoops for Hope, which features local law enforcement and community members playing an outdoor basketball game to help build stronger relationships within the community. The game draws large crowds and has been featured on local and national news networks.

 

“We’re extremely excited about adding Kannon to the staff,” Bowler said. “As a former player, his dedication and enthusiasm for our team matches mine. We’re happy to have him back at DMACC.”
