Freshman Kwat Abdelkarim of Lincoln, Neb., scored 24 points to lead the DMACC men's basketball team to an 83-61 win over Marshalltown Community College (MCC) November 30 inside the DMACC gymnasium.

 

The Bears overcame a nine-point first half deficit in taking a 31-29 lead into halftime and outscored the Tigers by 20 points in the second half to come away with the win. Freshmen Cael McGee of Stoughton, Wis., and Jaron Crews of Ankeny joined Abdelkarim in double figures with 12 and 11 points respectively.

 

DMACC, ranked 14th in this week's Division II poll from the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA), improved to 9-2 with the win. The Bears shot 45 percent, hitting 29 of 64 field goal attempts. They were 10-of-20 from three-point range and made 15 of 20 free throw attempts.

 

Abdelkarim got his 24 points by going 7-of-11 from the field, 4-of-7 from three-point range and 6-of-7 from the free throw line.

 

DMACC came away with a 45-29 advantage in rebounding, including 32 defensive rebounds. Abdelkarim, sophomore Greg Brown of Omaha, Neb., and freshman Angelo Winkel of Algona led the Bears with seven rebounds apiece. Brown dished out a team-high six assists and Abdelkarim and McGee had two steals apiece.

The DMACC men's basketball team begins Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC) play Dec. 3 at North Iowa Area Community College (NIACC). The Trojans bring a 5-5 record into the game, which is set for 3 pm. at Mason City.
