Bariffe-Smith leads DMACC men's basketball team past ILCC, 81-77

Sophomore Demarion Bariffe-Smith of Skokie, Ill., reached a double-double with 22 points and 15 rebounds and added four assists to lead the Des Moines Area Community College (DMACC) men's basketball team to an 81-77 win over Iowa Lakes Community College (ILCC) February 19 inside the DMACC gymnasium.

 

With the win, the Bears, ranked ninth in the most recent Division II poll from the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA), avenged a 69-59 loss to the seventh-ranked Lakers Jan. 22 at Estherville.

 

Sophomore Ryan Schmitt of Van Meter scored 16 points and freshman Mark Bradshaw of Chester, Penn., had 12 points as DMACC improved to 24-4 for the season and 10-2 in the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC).

 

ILCC, which was tied with the Bears for the ICCAC lead, fell to 22-5 and 9-3.

 

DMACC had a 44-36 advantage at halftime and led by as many as 13 points in the second half before ILCC clawed back to take a 75-74 advantage late in the game. Freshman Willie Guy's three-point basket put DMACC ahead 77-75 and the Bears led the rest of the way.

 

DMACC shot 43 percent in the win, hitting 24 of 57 field goal attempts. The Bears were 12-of-28 from three-point range and 21-of-26 from the free throw line.

 

Bariffe-Smith's 15 rebounds lifted DMACC to a 45-32 advantage on the boards. Schmitt came away with seven rebounds and a trio of blocked shots and sophomore Barlow Alleruzzo of Chicago, Ill., had three blocked shots.  Bariffe-Smith had four assists

 

The DMACC men's basketball team will close out the home portion of the 2019-20 regular-season schedule Feb. 22 against Iowa Central Community College (ICCC). Game time is 3 p.m. inside the DMACC gymnasium. ICCC is 10-16 overall and 3-8 in the ICCAC. The Bears defeated the Tritons, 80-54, when the two teams played Jan. 19 at Fort Dodge.
