DMACC Men's Basketball Team Falls to Kirkwood CC, 77-68

Kirkwood Community College (KCC) came away with a 77-68 win over DMACC men's basketball in a matchup of ranked teams Feb. 12th at Cedar Rapids.

 

The Eagles came into the game ranked 15th in the most recent Division II poll from the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA). DMACC is ranked fifth. The Bears fell to 22-4 for the season and 8-2 in the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC) with the loss.

 

DMACC had a 34-30 advantage at halftime but was outscored 47-34 in the second half as its four-game winning streak came to an end. Sophomores Zach Lester of Clear Lake and Barlow Alleruzzo of Chicago, Ill., led the Bears with 14 and 12 points respectively.

 

DMACC shot 42 percent in the loss, hitting 22 of 53 field goal attempts. The Bears were 7-of-23 from three-point range and 17-of-33 from the free throw line.

 

KCC had a 35-31 advantage on the boards with Alleruzzo's five rebounds leading DMACC. Sophomore Demarion Bariffe-Smith of Skokie, Ill., and freshmen Willie Guy of Cedar Rapids, Ryan Schmitt of Van Meter and Mike Hartford of McKinney, Texas, coming away with five rebounds apiece. Lester and sophomore Ty Majlik-Autry of St. Petersburg, Fla., had two assists apiece and Guy led the Bears in steals with three.

The DMACC men's basketball team will play Ellsworth Community College (ECC) Feb. 15th at Ellsworth. The Panthers are 13-12 overall and 3-6 in the ICCAC. DMACC came away with a 74-69 win when the two teams played Dec. 4th inside the DMACC gymnasium.
