DMACC men's basketball team tops Southeastern

Freshmen Willie Guy of Cedar Rapids and Ryan Schmitt of Van Meter scored 13 points apiece and freshman John Herrick of Boone came off the bench to score 12 points as the Des Moines Area Community College (DMACC) men's basketball team handed Southeastern Community College (SECC) a 65-56 loss February 5 at West Burlington.

 

The win was the fourth straight for the Bears, who improved to 21-3 for the season.

 

DMACC pulled away in the second half to get the win, outscoring the Blackhawks 41-32 after settling for a 24-24 tie at halftime. The Bears shot 45 percent, making 22 of 49 field goal attempts, including seven three-point baskets in 18 attempts. They were 14-of-19 from the free throw line.

 

Schmitt recorded a double-double with 10 rebounds as DMACC came away with a 35-30 advantage on the boards. Sophomore Demarion Bariffe-Smith of Skokie, Ill., had seven rebounds and Herrick added five.

 

Guy led DMACC in assists with four and Herrick had a team-high two steals.

 

The DMACC men's basketball team returns to Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC) Division II play Feb. 8 when the Bears face Little Priest Tribal Feb. 8 inside the DMACC gymnasium. Game time is 3 p.m. DMACC is 7-1 in league play. Let is 5-14 overall and 0-8 in league play. The Bears came away with an 82-60 win when the two teams play Dec. 7 at Winnebago, Neb.
