Buchanan leads DMACC men's basketball team past Quakerdale

Sophomore Tray Buchanan of East Moline, Ill., scored 31 points and dished out five assists to lead the Des Moines Area Community College (DMACC) men's basketball team to a 126-72 win over Quakerdale Prep Academy (QPA) December 18 inside the DMACC gymnasium.

 

Buchanan drained 11 of 14 field goal attempts, including going 5-of-7 from three-point range, and was 4-of-4 from the free throw line as the Bears improved to 11-3 for the season with their fifth consecutive win.

 

DMACC, ranked 19th in the most recent Division II poll from the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA), got 20 points from sophomore DeShawn Davidson of Waukegan, Ill., and 19 points and 10 rebounds from sophomore Zaire Swaby from Brooklyn, N.Y. Sophomore Ray Miller of Davenport and freshman Zach Lester of Clear Lake also reached double figures with 15 and 12 points respectively.

 

DMACC built a 61-42 lead at halftime and cruised to the win in the second half, leading by as many as 56 points. The Bears shot 60 percent, hitting 50 of 84 field goal attempts. They were 11-of-22 from three-point range and 15-of-19 from the free throw line.

 

Swaby's 10 rebounds helped DMACC to a 53-22 advantage on the boards. Miller grabbed eight rebounds and Lester finished with seven. Freshman Vinny Tarello of Bolingbrook, Ill., led the Bears in assists with seven and Buchanan, sophomore Devonta Prince of Brooklyn Center, Minn., sophomore Dyllan Robinson of Las Vegas, Neb., Swaby and Miller had two steals apiece.

 

The game closed out the December portion of the 2018-19 schedule for the DMACC men's basketball team. The Bears will face Kirkwood Community College (KCC) Jan. 9 at Cedar Rapids. KCC is 11-2 for the season, 2-0 in the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC) and is ranked seventh in NJCAA Division II. DMACC is 1-0 in the ICCAC.
