DMACC men's basketball team upsets #2 Southwestern in ICCAC opener

Freshman Tray Buchanan of East Moline, Ill., led four players in double figures with 17 points as the Des Moines Area Community College (DMACC) men's basketball team opened Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC) play with a 78-63 upset of Southwestern Community College (SWCC) December 5 inside the DMACC gymnasium.

 

Sophomore DeShawn Davidson of Waukegan, Ill., scored 15 points, freshman Vinny Tarello of Bolingbrook, Ill., had 12 and sophomore Dyllan Robinson of Las Vegas, Nev., recorded a double-double with 12 points and 16 rebounds as the Bears improved to 8-3 for the season.

 

SWCC came into the game at 10-0 and ranked second in the most recent Division II poll from the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA).

 

DMACC led 35-26 at halftime and pushed its advantage to as many as 18 points in the second half. The Bears got the win despite shooting just 36 percent from the field. They made 22 of 61 field goal attempts, including 4-of-22 from three-point range. DMACC was 30-of-35 from the free throw line.

 

Robinson's 16 rebounds included 11 defensive rebounds and helped the Bears to a 53-34 advantage on the boards. Davidson led DMACC in assists with four and freshman Zach Lester of Clear Lake topped the Bears in steals with three. Sophomore Ray Miller of Davenport recorded three blocked shots.

 

The DMACC men's basketball team will face Southeastern Community College (SECC) Dec. 10 inside the DMACC gymnasium. Game time is 7 p.m. SECC, an NJCAA Division I program, is 10-1 for the season with a five-game winning streak.
