DMACC men's basketball team tops County Upper Academy, MCC

The Des Moines Area Community College (DMACC) men's basketball team hosted the Baymont Inns & Suites Classic November 16 and 17 inside the DMACC gymnasium and came away with a pair of victories.

 

Sophomore DeShawn Davidson of Waukegan, Ill., led the Bears to both wins, scoring 24 points in a 110-38 victory against County Upper Academy (CUA) on Nov. 16 and getting 34 points in a 93-88 win against Metropolitan Community College (MCC) on Nov. 17.

 

DMACC improved to 6-2 with the wins.

 

Freshman Tray Buchanan of East Moline, Ill., freshman Zach Lester of Clear Lake and sophomore Dyllan Robinson of Las Vegas, Nev., joined Davidson in double figures with 22, 18 and 12 points respectively in DMACC's win against CUA. The Bears pulled away from a 2-2 tie with a 14-1 run to open up a 16-3 advantage and never looked back, leading 64-21 at the half.

 

The Bears shot 55 percent, connecting on 42 of 77 field goal attempts. They were 12-of-29 from three-point range and 14-of-22 from the free throw line.

 

CUA had a 41-37 advantage in rebounding. Robinson grabbed seven rebounds, sophomore Quinton Taylor of Cedar Point, Texas, had six and sophomore Zaire Swaby of Brooklyn, N.Y., added five to lead the Bears. Freshman Vinny Tarello of Bolingbrook, Ill., led DMACC in assists with five and Davidson and sophomore Devonta Prince of Brooklyn Center, Minn., had four apiece. Buchanan topped the Bears in steals with five and Prince and Lester had four apiece. Swaby contributed three blocked shots.

 

Davidson drained 10 of 19 field goal attempts, including 3-of-7 from three-point range, and made 11 of 12 free throw attempts in leading the Bears past MCC. Buchanan, Robinson and Lester were also in double figures with 16, 15 and 11 points respectively.

 

DMACC led 44-39 at the half. The game was close throughout the second half with the Bears taking the lead for good a 77-76 on Davidson's two-point basket with 6 minutes, 16 seconds to play. DMACC led by as many as seven points, 84-77, but MCC closed to within one point twice in the final three minutes, that last at 87-86 with 39 seconds remaining. Robinson's field goal and a pair of free throws from Davidson put the game out of reach at 91-86 with 22 seconds left.

 

The Bears shot 46 percent, connecting on 30 of 66 field goal attempts, including 7-of-24 from three-point range. They were 26-of-31 from the free throw line.

 

DMACC had a 44-39 advantage on the boards with Robinson's 12 rebounds leading the way. Davidson came away with nine and Taylor finished with eight. Prince and Tarello led the Bears in assists with six apiece and Robinson had a pair of steals.

 

The DMACC men's basketball team will face Marshalltown Community College (MCC) Nov. 24 inside the DMACC gymnasium. Game time is 3 p.m. MCC, a National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division I program, is 4-4 this season.
