DMACC men's basketball team splits two games in Holiday Inn Reiver Classic

The Des Moines Area Community College (DMACC) men's basketball team came away with a 1-1 record with its participation in the Holiday Inn Reiver Classic November 9 and 10 at Council Bluffs.

 

The Bears dropped an 88-82 decision to Iowa Western Community College (IWCC) in their tournament opener on Nov. 9 and then closed out tournament play with an 85-82 win against Cloud County Community College (CCCC) on Nov. 10.

 

The split gives DMACC a 4-1 record for the season.

 

Sophomore DeShawn Davidson of Waukegan, Ill., scored 26 points, freshman Tray Buchanan of East Moline, Ill., came away with 20 and sophomore Ray Miller of Davenport scored 13 in DMACC's loss to IWCC. The Bears trailed 38-37 at halftime and were outscored 50-44 in the second half in suffering their first loss of the season.

 

DMACC shot 43 percent, hitting 26 of 60 field goal attempts. The Bears were 7-of-22 from three-point range and made 22 of 30 free throw attempts.

 

IWCC had a 43-31 advantage on the boards with sophomore Quinton Taylor of Cedar Point, Texas, leading DMACC with eight rebounds. Sophomore Andrew Madison of Grand Rapids, Mich., had seven rebounds and sophomore Devonta Prince of Brooklyn Center, Minn., finished with six. Sophomore Dyllan Robinson of Las Vegas, Nev., led the Bears in assists with five and Buchanan topped DMACC in steals with three. Prince contributed a pair of blocked shots.

 

Buchanan's 25 points, 23 from Davidson and 21 by Prince lifted DMACC past CCCC. The Bears led 40-38 at halftime and outscored CCCC 45-44 in the second half to come away with their fourth win of the season.

 

DMACC shot 42 percent, connecting on 24 of 57 field goal attempts. The Bears were 10-of-22 from three-point range and made 27 of 35 free throw attempts.

 

Davidson's nine rebounds helped DMACC to a 42-39 advantage on the boards. Madison had eight rebounds and Prince and Robinson finished with five apiece. Davidson dished out five assists and Prince had four. Buchanan, Prince and Robinson led the Bears in steals with two apiece and Robinson had three blocked shots.

 

The DMACC men's basketball team will play Highland Community College (HCC) Nov. 13 at Highland, Kan. HCC is ranked seventh in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division II poll. DMACC has received votes in the poll, but is not ranked in the top 20.
