The Des Moines Area Community College (DMACC) men's basketball team ran its record to 7-1 with a pair of victories in the Baymont Inn & Suites Classic November 17 and 18 inside the DMACC gymnasium.
The Bears opened up an 62-16 halftime lead and coasted to a 107-37 win over County Upper Academy (CUA) on Nov. 17 and defeated Oakland Community College (OCC) 78-60 on Nov. 18 to extend their current winning streak to three games.
Freshman Lee Higgins of Chicago, Ill., led four players in double figures with 19 points in DMACC's win over CUA. Freshman Devonta Prince of Brooklyn Center, Minn., scored 13 points in the win and freshmen Hamza Gocobija of Chicago, Ill., and Louis Psihoyos of Dubuque finished with 12 and 11 points respectively.
The Bears shot 51 percent for the game, hitting 43-of-85 field goal attempts. They were 8-of-32 from three-point range and 13-of-18 from the free throw line.
CUA came away with a 51-44 advantage on the boards with freshman Andrew Madison Grand Rapids, Mich., leading DMACC with eight rebounds. Higgins and Gocobija grabbed six rebounds apiece and sophomore Antowine Locke of Bolingbrook, Ill., had five. Higgins and Locke led the Bears in assists with six and five respectively and Miller topped the Bears in steals with five. Freshman Brandon Lawn of Bolingbrook, Ill., had five blocked shots.
Sophomore Wali Parks of Iowa City scored 27 points and Higgins and Madison finished with 15 and 11 respectively in DMACC's win over OCC. The Bears took control of the game in the opening half and held a comfortable 43-26 advantage at halftime.
DMACC shot 46 percent in getting the win, draining 26 of 56 field goal attempts, including 11-of-31 from three-point range. The Bears were 15-of-32 from the free throw line.
OCC had a 58-42 advantage in rebounding with sophomore Nysir Marshburn of Philadelphia, Penn., leading the Bears with 10 rebounds. Parks finished with nine rebounds and Prince had seven. Parks led DMACC in assists and steals with five and three respectively and Higgins also came away with three steals. Prince finished with three blocked shots.
The DMACC men's basketball team will be home to Little Priest Tribal (LPT) today at 7 p.m. inside the DMACC gymnasium. The Bears defeated LPT 87-82 when the two teams played Nov. 1 at Winnebago, Neb.
