The Des Moines Area Community College (DMACC) men's basketball team came away with a win and a loss during a two-game trip to Chicago, Ill., November 10 and 11.
The Bears opened the trip with a 90-81 win over Harry S. Truman College (HSTC) on Nov. 10, stretching their winning streak to four games. The streak ended Nov. 11 when DMACC dropped a 91-90 double-overtime decision to Olive-Harvey College (OHC).
The split gives the Bears a 4-1 record for the season.
Freshman Lee Higgins of Chicago, Ill., led four players in double figures with 25 points in DMACC's win over HSTC. Freshman Ray Miller of Davenport had 16 points in the win and sophomore Shammond Ivory of Perry and freshman Elijah Ward of Joliet, Ill., scored 13 and 11 points respectively.
The Bears shot 54 percent in the first half (14-of-26) to take a 44-38 lead into intermission. They made 15 of 28 shots in the second half to come away with the win, finishing the game with 54 percent shooting (29-of-54). DMACC was 9-of-18 from three-point range, and made 18 of 23 free throw attempts.
HSTC came away with a 42-40 advantage on the boards with sophomore Wali Parks of Iowa City and freshman Andrew Madison of Grand Rapids, Mich., grabbing eight rebounds apiece to lead the Bears. Miller and sophomore Antowine Locke of Bolingbrook, Ill., had three assists apiece in the win and Higgins and Locke had three steals apiece.
Parks scored 24 points, Higgins added 21 and Miller finished with 13 in DMACC's lost to OHC. The Bears led 35-32 at halftime, but were outscored 42-39 in the second half, sending the game into overtime knotted at 74. The two teams went into the second overtime tied at 84.
After making 12 of 22 field goal attempts in the first half, the Bears were just 14-of-36 in the second half and overtime periods to finish the game at 45 percent (26-of-58). DMACC was 6-of-18 from three-point range and 32-of-44 from the free throw line.
The Bears came away with a 41-40 advantage in rebounding with sophomore Nysir Marshburn of Philadelphia, Penn., leading the way with eight rebounds. Locke had seven rebounds and Madison finished with six. Miller dished out a team-high six assists and Marshburn had four steals.
The DMACC men's basketball team will host the William Penn University junior varsity on Nov. 14. Game time is 7:30 p.m. inside the DMACC gymnasium.
