The DMACC baseball team fell to 15-22 overall and 9-10 in the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC) after losing two of three games against Indian Hills Community College (IHCC) April 12 and 13 at Centerville.
The Bears got a pair of home runs and three RBIs from sophomore Colin Driscoll of Waukee in winning the opener on April 12, 7-5. IHCC took the second game, 11-9, and won a single game on April 13, 10-0.
Driscoll belted a two-run home run in the second inning and a solo shot in the fourth in the Bears' win. His second-inning home run cut IHCC's lead to 3-2 and the Bears went up 7-3 on Driscoll's solo home run in the fourth and a four-run rally in the sixth. IHCC scored twice in the bottom of the sixth after taking a 3-0 lead in the first.
Driscoll also singled and accounted for three of DMACC's seven hits. Freshman Archer Ogbourne of Carlisle had a triple and drove in three runs and sophomore Carter Bryan of Johnston doubled for the Bears. Freshman Jake Espeland of Des Moines drove in DMACC's other run.
Sophomore Jaqson Tejada of Marion pitched the first five innings and improved to 1-2 with the win. He allowed four runs on six hits, struck out four and walked three. Freshman Andrew Theiss of Clear Lake went two innings and earned his first save of the season. He allowed one run on three hits and struck out four.
IHCC used a four-run rally in the bottom of the eighth to take the second game. Both teams scored a run in the second and DMACC took a 2-1 lead with a run in the top of the third. IHCC answered with four runs in the bottom of the inning for a 6-2 lead but DMACC tied it with four runs in the top of the fifth. IHCC responded with a run in the bottom of the inning for a 7-6 lead and then fell behind 8-7 when the Bears scored twice in the top of the seventh. The Warriors' four-run rally in the bottom of the eighth game them an 11-8 advantage and DMACC made it a two-run game with a run in the top of the ninth.
Freshman Adam Leininger of Fargo, N.D., hit a pair of home runs for DMACC and drove in three runs. Bryan had three hits, including a home run, and drove in four runs and sophomore Jackson Manning of Keosauqua had two hits, including a home run, and drove in one run. The Bears also got a double from sophomore Kaden Frommelt of Marion.
DMACC used six pitchers in the loss. Sophomore Bobby Uthe of Ames threw the first two innings, allowing one run on two hits with one strikeout and one walk. Freshman Rhett Pleggenkuhle of Van Meter pitched a third of an inning, allowing three runs and walking two batters and freshman Jordan Leininger of Fargo, N.D., went an inning and two-thirds, surrendering two runs on three hits with one strikeout and three walks. Freshman Eli Christensen of Ankeny pitched two-thirds of an inning and gave up one run on one hit with one walk and freshman Gage Miller of Mandan, N.D., fell to 0-5 with the loss. He went two and two-thirds innings, allowing three runs on four hits with four strikeouts and one walk. Freshman Nick Cox of Polk City pitched two-thirds of an inning and allowed one run on one hit.
IHCC scored three runs in the first, two in the four, one in the fifth and four in the seventh in winning the single game on April 13.
DMACC collected seven hits in the loss, including doubles by Ogbourne, Adam Leininger and Espeland.
Sophomore Konner Entz of West Fargo, N.D., pitched the first three and two-thirds innings and suffered his first loss of the season against two wins. He allowed five runs on five hits, struck out three and walked six. Pleggenkuhle went an inning and two-thirds, giving up one run on two hits with two strikeouts and a walk and Uthe struck out two batters and walked one in two-thirds of an inning on the mound. Freshman Zach Turpin of Waukee and Christensen each pitched a third of an inning. Turpin gave up four runs on one hit with two walks and Christensen gave up one hit, struck out one batter and walked one.
The DMACC baseball team will face Ellsworth Community College (ECC) in a single game April 16 at Iowa Falls. ECC is 23-18 and 10-10
