DMACC baseball team takes doubleheader from Century

The DMACC baseball team opened the home portion of the 2022 season with a doubleheader sweep of Century College March 16 at the DMACC baseball diamond. The Bears won the opener, 11-1, and took second game, 14-4. Both games were called after six innings because of the mercy rule.

 

Covid-19 freshman (CoFR) Jake Thilges of Johnston had a double and a triple and drove in four runs to lead the Bears to their win in the first game. DMACC scored seven runs in the first inning and closed out the game with four runs in the bottom of the sixth. Century College tallied its lone run in the top of the fourth.

 

Covid-19 sophomore (CoSO) Jack Luster of Huxley joined Thilges with two hits in the win and CoSO Jackson Fisher of Chariton and freshman Brodie Kresser of Jesup drove in two runs apiece.

 

DMACC used six pitchers in the win. CoFR Kaleb Krier of Altoona pitched the first inning, allowing one hit and striking out one batter. Freshman Brady Latcham of Pekin went one inning and recorded one strikeout and CoSO Bret Price of Boone struck out one batter and walked one in one inning. CoSO Cade Van Ness of Glenwood, CoFR Ben Dixon of Sioux City and CoFR Greg Ryun of Victoria, Minn., also threw one inning apiece. Van Ness allowed one run on one hit, struck out one and walked one, Dixon recorded two strikeouts and Ryun struck out one and walked one.

 

Freshman Cy Patterson of Council Bluffs had three RBIs and freshman Sergio Lira Ayala of Nappannee, Ind., CoFR Donovan Weaver of Davenport and CoFR Nick Ripa of Papillion, Neb., had two RBIs apiece for DMACC in the second game.

 

Century College led 2-1 after the first inning but DMACC took control of the game with six runs in the third and four in the fourth. The Bears closed out the win with three runs in the bottom of the sixth.

 

Freshman Carl Boever of Sioux City, CoFR Brett Berg of Wes Des Moines, Weaver and Ripa had two hits apiece for the Bears. Extra-base hits included a home run by Kresser, a triple from Boever, a double by Lira Ayala and two doubles from Weaver.

 

DMACC also used six pitchers in the second game. CoFR Jackson Stewart of Urbandale pitched the first two innings, allowing two runs on three hits and struck out three batters. CoFR Anthony Potthoff of Van Meter went one inning, allowing one hit with one strikeout and two walks and freshman Cooper Smith of Johnston surrendered three walks in one inning on the mound. CoFR Jacob Norris of North Liberty went a third of an inning and gave up two runs on two hits with a pair of walks. CoFR Simon Gregersen of Ramsey, Minn., struck out one batter in two-thirds of an inning and CoFR Jarrett Novak of Omaha, Neb., struck out two batters in one inning of work.

 

The DMACC baseball team will face Iowa Western Community College (IWCC) and Southwestern Community College (SWCC) March 20 at Council Bluffs.
