DMACC baseball team splits two games on opening day

The DMACC baseball team opened the 2022 season with a doubleheader against Northern Oklahoma-Tonkawa (NOT) Feb. 10 at Tonkawa, Okla., and came away with a split of the two games. DMACC took the opener, 6-5, and lost the second game, 7-6.

 

Freshman Reed Stallman of Alburnett, Covid-19 sophomore (CoSO) Jackson Fisher of Chariton and CoSO Jack Thilges of Johnston had two hits apiece for DMACC in the opener, including a home run by Fisher and a double from Thilges. Fisher had three RBIs in the win and CoSO Jack Luster of Huxley and sophomore Jake Brill of Maple, Wis., each doubled.

 

DMACC had leads of 2-1 after two innings, 5-3 after five innings and 6-3 after six innings. NOT scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the seventh to close to within one run.

 

Covid-19 freshman (CoFR) Anthony Potthoff of Van Meter pitched the first three innings for the Bears, allowing one run on two hits. He walked one batter and struck out six. CoFR Ben Dixon of Sioux City went an inning and two-thirds, allowing one run on two hits. He struck out two and walked one. CoFR Simon Gregersen of Ramsey, Minn., worked two and two-thirds innings, allowing two runs on five hits. He struck out five and walked one.

Freshman Brodie Kresser of Jesup had three hits and Luster and Stallman came away with two in DMACC's loss in the second game. The Bears trailed 4-1 after the first inning but gained a 4-4 tie with three runs in the top of the second. NOT opened up a 7-4 lead with three runs in the bottom of the third and DMACC closed to within 7-6 with one run in each of the fourth and fifth innings.

 

Kresser and Stallman each doubled in the game and Brill and CoFR Tre Mungin of Omaha, Neb., had triples. Kresser drove in two DMACC runs.

 

The Bears used six pitchers in the game. CoSO Cade Van Ness of Glenwood went an inning, allowing four runs on four hits. He struck out one and walked two. Freshman Thomas King of West Des Moines went a third of an inning, allowing one hit and one walk and freshman Cooper Smith of Johnston worked one inning and allowed three runs on two hits with one walk. CoSO Blake Grevengoed of West Des Moines threw an inning and two-thirds, striking out one batter and walking four, and CoSO Cole Kaufman of Waukee struck out one batter and walked three in an inning and two-thirds. Freshman Drew Sherbenske of Rapid City, S.D., went a third of an inning and retired the only batter he faced.

 

The DMACC baseball team will play North Central Texas College (NCTC) in doubleheaders today and Feb. 12 at Gainesville, Texas. The Lions area 3-1 and have won their last three games after losing their season opener.
