DMACC baseball team takes two of three games agains NOCE

The Des Moines Area Community College (DMACC) baseball team came away with a pair of wins in a three-game series against Northeast Oklahoma College-Enid February 28 and 29 at Enid, Okla.

 

The Bears lost the first game of a doubleheader on Feb. 28, 9-7, but took the second game, 4-1. They closed out the series with a 19-14 win on Feb. 29 to improved to 3-7 for the season.

 

Sophomores Dylan Voves of Mason City and freshmen Kaleb Harrison of Neola, Carson Schau of Waukee and Carter Bornemeier of Elmwood, Neb., had two hits and two RBIs apiece in the Bears' loss in the opener of Feb. 28. Harrison, Schau, Bornemeier and sophomore Grant Bohling of Lincoln, Neb., each doubled the loss.

 

NOCE took a 2-0 lead in the first before DMACC gained a tie with single runs in the second and fourth innings. NOCE made it a 4-2 game with a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth and then used a four-run rally in the bottom of the eighth to get the win after DMACC tied the contest at 5-5 with a run in the sixth and two in the seventh. The Bears made it close with a pair of runs in the top of the ninth.

 

Sophomore Will Moritz of West Des Moines pitched the first five and two-third innings, allowing five runs on 10 hits. He struck out four and walked two. Sophomore Nathaniel Gorczyca of Omaha, Neb., worked two and a third innings, allowing four runs on four hits. He struck out four, walked one and suffered the loss.

 

Voves had two hits, including a double, and drove in one run in DMACC's win in the second game. Voves, Bohling, Schau and sophomore Elijah Rude of Hudson, Wis., drove in one run apiece in the win.

 

DMACC pulled away from a 1-1 tie with a pair of runs inn the fifth inning and closed out the win with a run in the seventh.

 

Sophomore Kolton Scherbenske of Rapid City, S.D., went all seven innings to come away with the win. He allowed one run on 10 hits, struck out 10 and walked one.

DMACC collected eight hits and took advantage of six errors and 15 walks by NOCE pitchers to get the win on Feb. 29. The Bears trailed 13-7 after six innings but scored 12 runs in the top of the seventh for the win.

 

Schau paced DMACC at the plate with a pair of singles and Bohling and freshman Dayne Leonard of Spring Green, Wis., each doubled. Bohling and Leonard drove in four runs apiece and Schau had a pair of RBIs.

 

The Bears used eight pitchers in the win. Freshman Ray Ray Douglas of Sioux City started and went three innings, allowing nine runs on six hits. He struck out four and walked one. Sophomore Logan Ymker of Sioux Falls, S.D., worked one inning, allowing one run on one hit and striking out one batter. Freshman Tony Moser of Plainfield, Ill., also went an inning, striking out one batter and walking one and freshman Bret Price of Boone gave up one run and walked one batter but was not credited with any innings pitched. Sophomore Evan Appenzeller of Boone gave up two runs on two hits and walked one batter and was not credited with any innings pitched and freshman Ben Nippolt of St. Paul, Minn., went one inning and came away with his first win of the season behind one hit. He struck out two batters and walked one. Sophomore Jacob Passow of Germantown, Wis., went a third of an inning, allowing one run on two hits and walking two batters and sophomore Cole Schumacher of Bennington, Neb., went two-thirds of an inning and retired the only two batters he faced
