DMACC baseball team splits doubleheader with NIACC

The Des Moines Area Community College (DMACC) baseball team split a doubleheader against North Iowa Area Community College (NIACC) March 31 at the DMACC baseball team.

 

NIACC took the opener, 13-4, and DMACC won the nightcap, 9-8. The split gives the Bears a 14-9 record and a 4-2 mark in the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC).

 

DMACC was limited to just four hits in losing the opener. NIACC led throughout the game, including 4-0 after the first inning, 5-1 after two innings and 7-2 after three innings. The Trojans closed out the win with a run in the sixth and five runs in the seventh. DMACC scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth.

 

Freshmen Dylan Voves of Mason City and Carter Troncin of Urbandale and sophomores Austin Murr of Stillwater, Minn., and Denver Blinn of West Fargo, N.D., collected base hits for DMACC, including a home run by Troncin and a double by Murr. Troncin drove in two runs.

 

Freshman Jackson Uner of Maplewood, Minn., started on the mound for the Bears and was credited with just one inning. Uner, who suffered the loss to fall to 2-2 for the season, allowed five runs on three hits, struck out one and walked four. Freshman Jonas Sanders of Fargo, N.D., threw five innings, allowing three runs on six hits. He struck out five and walked two. Freshman Cole Schumacher of Bennington, Neb., threw one inning, allowing five runs on four hits. He walked one batter.

 

Sophomore Evan Salmon of Urbandale had three hits, including a double and a home run, and drove in four runs for DMACC in the second game. The Bears led 3-1 after the first inning and overcame a 4-3 deficit with two runs in the bottom of the fifth and three in the bottom of the sixth for an 8-4 lead. NIACC closed to 8-6 with two runs in the top of the seventh and DMACC made it a 9-6 game with a run in the bottom of the inning. NIACC scored twice in the eighth to make it a 9-8 game.

 

Murr and Troncin had two hits apiece in the win, including another home run by Troncin, and Voves drove in two runs with Murr and Troncin each getting one RBI.

 

Freshman Logan Ymker of Sioux Falls, S.D., pitched the first inning and two-thirds for DMACC, allowing three runs on one hit. He struck out one and walked four. Freshman Kaden Peterson of Luther went three and a third innings and improved to 2-0 with the win. He allowed one run, struck out two and walked three. Freshman Thomas Bruchu of Stillwater, Minn., pitched two innings, allowing four runs on four hits with one strikeout and one walk and freshman Nathaniel Gorczyca of Omaha, Neb., allowed three hits, struck out two and walked one in an inning and two-thirds. Sophomore Jakob Richardson of Cave Creek, Ariz., got his second save of the season, working just a third of an inning and striking out the only batter he faced.

 

DMACC and NIACC will play another doubleheader today at the DMACC baseball diamond. Game time is 1 p.m.
