DMACC baseball team falls to KCC in Region XI tournament opener

The Des Moines Area Community College (DMACC) baseball team lost is first-round game in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division II Baseball Tournament May 10 at Clinton.

Kirkwood Community College (KCC) defeated the Bears, 9-1, sending them to 24-27 for the season and into the consolation bracket of the double-elimination tournament. DMACC, the tournament's No. 6 seed, will face either second-seeded North Iowa Area Community College (NIACC) or seventh-seeded Northeast (Neb.) Community College (NECC) in an elimination game May 11 at Clinton.

DMACC won three of four games against NECC during the regular season and dropped three of four games against NIACC.

The Bears were limited to seven hits in their loss to KCC, including two each by sophomore Matt Krambeck of Louisville, Neb., freshman Tavien Gillette of Rock Island, Ill., and freshman Robbie McCargar of West Des Moines. Krambeck had a single and a double and Gillette singled and tripled.

McCargar, who had a pair of singles, drove in DMACC's only run on an infield grounder in the second inning. Gillette opened the inning with a triple and scored on McCargar's infield grounder.

Sophomore John Werner of Burlington suffered his sixth loss of the season against three victories. He pitched four innings, allowing six runs on six hits, struck out one and walked three. Sophomore Alec Holcomb of Owatonna, Minn., threw three innings, allowing two runs on three hits. He struck out four and walked two. Freshman Henry Ristvedt of Savage, Minn., gave up a run on two hits and walked one batter but was not credited with any innings pitched. Ristvedt was on the mound in the bottom of the eighth when KCC scored its ninth run, ending the game because of the mercy rule.
