DMACC Baseball Team Splits Doubleheader with Ellsworth

The Des Moines Area Community College (DMACC) baseball team split a doubleheader with Ellsworth Community College (ECC) April 22 at Iowa Falls.

 

The Bears took the opener, 5-2, and dropped the nightcap, 8-4. The split gives DMACC a 16-20 record and a 5-11 mark in the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC).

 

Sophomores Matt Krambeck of Omaha, Neb., and Jeremy Lovera of Allentown, Penn., had two hits apiece, including a home run from Lovera, to lead the Bears in the opener. Freshman Denver Blinn of West Fargo, N.D., drove in a pair of runs and Krambeck, Lovera and freshman Austin Weiler of Olathe, Kan., had one RBI apiece.

 

DMACC broke a scoreless tie with four runs in the top of the third and added its other run in the top of the fourth. ECC scored single runs in the fifth and sixth innings.

 

Freshman Spencer Hanson of West Des Moines improved to 5-1 with the win. He pitched five innings, allowing two runs on nine hits, struck out seven and walked one. Freshman Jakob Richardson of Cave Creek, Ariz., worked two innings and recorded his second save of the season. He struck out three and walked two.

 

DMACC cut an ECC lead to 3-2 with two runs in the top of the seventh in the second game, but the Panthers responded with three runs in the bottom of the inning to gain a 6-2 advantage. The Bears made it a 6-3 game with a run in the top of the eighth, but ECC had another answer, scoring twice in the bottom of the inning for an 8-3 advantage before DMACC scored its final run in the top of the ninth.

 

Schwabe and freshman Austin Murr of Denmark Township, Minn., paced DMACC's 9-hit attack with two hits apiece and Weiler added a home run. Schwabe, Murr, Krambeck and Weiler drove in one run apiece.

 

Freshman Nate Holliday of Muscatine pitched four and a third innings for the Bears and saw his record fall to 0-2 with the loss. He allowed three runs on four hits, struck out two and walked two. Freshman Jackson Uner of Stillwater, Minn., worked two innings and gave up two runs on two hits. He struck out two and walked two. Freshman Sam Laakso of Duluth, Minn., pitched one inning, allowing three runs on two hits with one strikeout and one walk and Richardson threw two-thirds of an inning, giving up a hit, striking out one batter and walking one.

 

The two teams will play another doubleheader April 23 at Iowa Falls. ECC is 11-28 overall and 8-10 in the ICCAC.
