Freshman Austin Weiler of Olatha, Kan., hit a two-run double and belted a grand slam home run to lead the Des Moines Area Community College (DMACC) baseball team to a 10-0 win over Iowa Lakes Community College (ILCC) in the second game of a doubleheader April 2 at the DMACC baseball diamond.

The win gave the Bears a split of the two-game series and improved their record to 12-11 overall and 3-3 in the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC).

ILCC took the opener, 7-3.

Freshmen Calen Schwabe of Thompson, N.D., and Jacob Pinkerton of Beatrice, Neb., joined Weiler with two hits in the game, including a solo home run by Pinkerton.

Weiler's two-run double helped DMACC to four runs in the first inning and the Bears put the game away with four more runs in the fifth and two in the sixth, at which point the game was called because of the mercy rule.

Freshman Sam Laakso of Duluth, Minn., pitched the first two innings for DMACC, allowing two hits, striking out two batters and walking one. Sophomore John Werner of Burlington threw four innings of one-hit baseball and got the win to level his record at 2-2. He struck out five and walked two.

ILCC used three-run rallies in the fifth and sixth innings to come away with the win in the opener. Weiler led the Bears at the plate with three hits, including a run-scoring double in the fifth inning when DMACC scored all three of its runs. Weiler also accounted for another run when he stole home.

Sophomore Alec Holcomb of Owatonna, Minn., pitched the first five innings for the Bears and saw his record fall to 0-4 with the loss. He allowed four runs on four hits, struck out six and walked three. Only one of the four runs allowed by Holcomb was earned.

Sophomore Luke Longmuir of Cottage Grove, Minn., worked a third of an inning, allowing three runs on three hits and walking one batter and Laasko threw and inning and two-thirds, allowing two hits and striking out one batter.

A doubleheader against Iowa Western Community College (IWCC) scheduled for today has been cancelled because of inclement weather.

The DMACC baseball team will face North Iowa Area Community College (NIACC) in doubleheaders April 7 and 8 at Mason City. The Trojans are 12-15 overall and 4-4 in the ICCAC.
